A discography is a minimally invasive, interventional diagnostic imaging test. It helps find the specific intervertebral disc causing pain in your back. Now, Intervertebral discs are sponge-like cushions between the vertebrae (spine). There is a very complex structure which makes the test very crucial in finding the source of pain.
In this procedure, they will shave the suspected area of the source. Then, they will give your local anaesthesia to numb the area. Now, using real-time x-ray images (fluoroscopy), the physician will insert a needle in the area and release contrast material in the disc. The patient is then asked about the location and severity of pain to find the location of the source.
How to prepare yourself for the test?
Before the test, it is important to share your medical history with the doctor to avoid any issues. Also, stop taking aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or blood thinners several days prior to your procedure. Don’t drink alcohol and come in a comfortable outwear. You won’t be able to drive yourself back.
You can visit Dr Neville Campbell (M.D./M.B.A) for a Discography. He is a pain management physician, and his clinic is in Florida, USA.
